It never ceases to surprise us that the campuses of Waldorf schools, which are otherwise so welcoming, invariably provide visitors with no place to sit outdoors. At best there may be a rough-hewn picnic table or two brought in from Home Depot, but nothing that resonates with the architectural forms of the school building and its landscape. Here, we believe, is a solution.

Although the bench is rugged enough for an outdoor setting, its graceful lines, quietly echoing the design principles of Rudolf Steiner, make it quite at home in a school hallway or even a large classroom where it can serve as a reading nook or a “quiet space” for a child.

The Footrest

Though light in weight, The Footrest is no less sturdy than its Garden Bench sire. Forty screws give it the rigidity and strength necessary for an object that is meant to be pushed around and stepped on. Would that we all possessed such resilience!

Our bench is constructed of cedarwood. It is light enough to be moved by two middle-schoolers (or a few eager kindergarteners). Its abundance of hidden screws and bolts assure its sustainability even given the inevitable roughhousing of schoolchildren, while its 100% cedar construction will help it weather many a rainstorm over the years.

Made from the same premium Cedar, the Footrest is water-resistant and naturally warm-hued. And it is designed to slide effortlessly under the Garden Bench when space is at a premium.
